Password Security

To restrict access and use of your content, you can secure your PDF file with one of the following types of password:

  • Open passwords: Lock your file so only people with the correct password can open it
  • Permission passwords: Lock particular functionality when a user opens your file. For example, you could stop recipients from copying text from your PDF document or printing it

To Enable Password Security

    1. Open the Inspector window to the Document Permissions tab. (Window> Document Permissions).
    2. Click the Add button. Enter your desired password in the Password field, and then enter the password again in the Verify field. Click OK to finish.
    3. Select your permissions. The Pre-sets popup has a list of common permissions settings, explained below.
    4. Choose File > Save to apply these settings.

NOTE: 128-bit AES is the default security encryption by Nitro PDF Pro.

Can Nitro Pro allow someone to change or a remove password from a protected or restricted documents?

Yes. You can remove or change document security settings with Nitro PDF Pro as long as you have the relevant password associated to the encrypted document. In Document Permissions, click Change and choose Remove Owner Password.

What happens if you forget the password?

If you forget the password that you set on a PDF file, there is no way of recovering it – so make sure you write it down and keep it in a safe place!
